Album Description Imagine a party, a musical party inspired by the holiday season. A party that celebrates the universal hopes, dreams and joy animating seasonal festivals the world over - Christmas, Hanukkah, Eid al-Adha, Kwanzaa, Yule and New Year's Day. That is what brought Yo-Yo Ma together with a remarkable group of friends - some old, some new - to create SONGS OF JOY & PEACE. It is Yo-Yo's hope that everyone who listens to this album will hear a song familiar, comfortable and beloved to them as well as discover and fall in love with music that is brand new.

I love it, it's not just for the holidays January 2, 2009 Delaney (WI) There is something so absolutely stirring about the cello to me. I love this cd. It has moments of peace, and moments of fun and I could listen to all day for days. I like Yo Yo Ma's friends and I'm very happy they joined him on this cd. Alison Krauss is simply haunting on the Wexford Carol. Chris Botti is great on the trumpet and even Joshua Redman, I'm not a big fan of the saxophone, but his song is really beautiful.

I agree with the other one star reviewers - this album is a huge waste of misplaced talent and an utter waste of time and money
beautiful arrangements, very relaxing...listen to the clips! December 29, 2008 Michele S. Jacobs (East coast, usa) I love this cd. I played several of the clips on amazon and knew I had to have this album! It's lovely. Very nice (albeit somewhat unusual at times) arrangements. My suggestion is to listen to the clips (esecially #9 Panxolina--if you can stand that, this album is for you), and if you like it, buy it, and if it's NOT your *type* of music, then don't! I would not expect everyone to like this album (not sure why some of the reviews are so venomous!). If you like Yo-Yo Ma, and appreciate the different collaborations he does (think Bobbie McFerrin), then you'll want to give this album a listen. If you are hoping for Jingle Bells, not so much. Who else would put "My One And Only Love" and "Here Comes the Sun" (one of my FAVORITE all-time songs, by the way)on the same album as "Dona Nobis Pacem" (4 different versions!) and "The Wexford Carol" ? It's just a different album, and thoroughly enjoyable. And for you Greenies--it doesn't come in a jewel box...it's in a tri-fold cardboard folder. excellent! (especially since EVERY cd I've gotten from amazon has had a cracked jewel case)
Beautiful Recording December 27, 2008 Pileated (CT, USA) Yo-Yo Ma's album "Songs of Joy and Peace" brings together a fairly wide range of genres and musical backgrounds into an exploration of musical joyousness. There's a compelling unity here above and beyond the cellist's influence on each track, and, considering how diverse the tracks are, I think that's quite an accomplishment in itself. The virtuosity of every individual performer is striking, and in combination with Yo-Yo Ma and others the result of their playing is often breathtaking. If you're looking for something fresh in the way of holiday music, choosing this beautifully performed and recorded CD is a sure bet.
Book lover December 26, 2008 Eileen Mccarthy (Springfield, Ma.) I love this Cd, it is so different, and very enjoyable. I love Yo Yo Ma, and all the special artists he picked for this album. Great!!
